When it comes to language learning, picking or selecting which language to learn can be really hard to do. But what should you consider on this search? Well, for starters think about the languages that are spoken most in the world.
When you really consider it, some of the easy languages to learn are the ones that are Latin-based and also related to the English language. So let’s start with these first:
FRENCH - French is a Romance language spoken as a first language in France. It it also estimated that some 250 million people speak French and that French is the official language of 29 countries worldwide.
HAITIAN CREOLE
Haitian Creole (Kreyòl ayisyen), often called simply Creole or Kreyòl, is a language spoken in Haiti in addition to French by about twelve million people. This estimated figure would include the nearly two to three million speakers residing in the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominican Republic, France, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Ivory Coast, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, and Venezuela. There is a French-based Creole spoken in the French Republic of Dominica. Creole is based largely on 18th Century French, with a mix of some African languages, as well as languages such as Arawak, English, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, and Taíno.
Just as French, Spanish is also considered one of the Romance languages. It originated in a region of Spain called Castile. This is why it’s called “castellano” by most natives. There are approximately 405 million people who speak Spanish as their native language, making it the second most spoken language by way of native speakers following Mandarin Chinese.
Romanian is a Romance language spoken by some 24 million natives mostly in Romania and Moldavia and by an additional 4 million as a second language. There are also many Romanian speakers are spread across other countries such as Italy, Spain, Ukraine, Bulgaria, the United States, Canada, Israel, Russia, Portugal, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
The Italian language or lingua italiana is another Romance language spoken mainly in Italy. However, it is also used by many in other European countries such as Switzerland, San Marino, Vatican City, by minorities in Malta, Monaco, Croatia, Slovenia, France, Libya, Eritrea, and Somalia.
It is estimated that Italian is spoken by a total of some 85 million people, 59 million of which speak it as their mother tongue mainly in Italy of course.
Portuguese or língua portuguesa is a Romance language. It is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Portuguese evolved from several dialects of colloquial Latin in the medieval Kingdom of Galicia. With an estimated population of 210-215 million native speakers and 240 million total speakers, Portuguese is usually listed as the seventh most spoken language in the world (or sixth, being very close to Bengali in native speakers), the third European language most spoken in the world, the most spoken language in both South America (the number of Spanish and Portuguese speakers is actually extremely close, but about 51% of the continent’s population lives in Brazil) and the Southern Hemisphere, the second most spoken Romance language in Africa (after French) and the most spoken Romance language in Oceania, Japan and Mainland Asia.
GERMAN
German is a West Germanic language related mostly to the English and Dutch language with about 100 million who are native speakers. Many words in the German language stem from Latin, Greek and even some French and it uses the Latin alphabet for writing.
Just as German, the English language is considered a West Germanic language. It was first spoken during early medieval England and today is most widely used language globally. It also is written using the Latin script. If you study German, you will notice that there are many words that are very similar to English.
These are easy languages to learn for most beginners due to the very close similarities of their grammatical structures. If you learn one, you likely could learn another with less difficultly by implementing a simple system based on your first experience. Although learning a foreign language can’t be done overnight, it can bring long lasting benefits to those who strive to accomplish it.
Although these are probably considered some easy languages to learn, every learner should consider the various methods that they have available to learn them. There are many online and offline options both free and paid to learn a language. The methods that you choose will determine how fast or slow you learn them. If time is not the most important aspect for you, then the best thing is to discover which method will work best to help you get the most out of your efforts.
